The Yacht

A phinisi shaped by hand in 2008, and rethought in a full refit in 2025.

El Aleph is built to bring a group together. Her upper deck is large for her 39 meters, her main-deck entertaining area was reconfigured in 2025 to open onto the sea and sky for exactly the long dinner a group of friends comes to Indonesia to share, and her galley has a reputation of its own.

The interior style is called Archipelago Chic: teak left close to its natural grain, antiques chosen one at a time from Javanese and Balinese dealers, hand-woven textiles from the islands she sails. She draws 3.4 meters, suited to the reef passages of eastern Indonesia, and carries a full scuba kit, a PADI instructor, four paddleboards, four sea kayaks and the wakeboard, water skis and fishing gear a group of friends puts to use.

She was shaped by hand at Tana Beru in 2008 and given a complete refit in 2025, and her three-meter draft brings her into bays the deeper hulls pass by. Komodo fills her dry season and Raja Ampat the northwest monsoon, with the Banda Sea crossings between.

The Experience

The Right Guests for El Aleph

A group of friends, five couples or a mixed party of ten, who would rather be together than spread across a bigger boat, and who want the table to be the center of the week. Divers get a full program with a PADI instructor, and a family that brings a nanny gets a cabin for her outside the count.

A week on El Aleph for a group of friends is a dive or a snorkel in the morning, the upper deck in the afternoon, the long dinner at night, and the nanny cabin below for the family that brings one.

2025 Refit: Archipelago Chic

The 2025 refit brought a deliberate shift in aesthetic direction. Lighter teak, left closer to its natural grain, replaced heavier finished surfaces. Handwoven textiles from the islands El Aleph sails appear in every cabin and shared space. Antiques from Javanese and Balinese dealers were selected individually, not in sets. Bathrooms were fully rebuilt. The result is a vessel whose interior feels rooted in the archipelago.

Accommodation

Five Considered Spaces

The master suite occupies the upper deck, the most generous of the five cabins at 7.5 by 4 meters with wraparound windows, a private balcony, walk-in wardrobe, and dressing room. The Super King bed is paired with a daybed beneath the windows. Light teak joinery and handwoven headboard textiles reflect the 2025 refit's quiet confidence: nothing superfluous, nothing borrowed from a hotel catalog.

Two VIP double cabins below deck offer queen beds and daybeds, with the same antique details and refitted en-suite bathrooms. Two further standard double cabins, each convertible between queen and twin configurations (the twins can interconnect, useful for families), complete the layout. Every cabin is air-conditioned and has cross-ventilation for when guests prefer sea air to refrigeration. A separate nanny cabin with en-suite is available below deck, outside the main five-cabin count.

A Closer Look

El Aleph in Detail

Built without drawings at Serangan, crewed thirteen to ten, the reefs she is drafted for, and the 2025 refit.

Serangan, 2008, Without Drawings
The Build

Serangan, 2008, Without Drawings

She was built in the boatyards of Serangan, Bali, by Konjo boatbuilders from Tana Beru, working as their village has for centuries, without drawings, from hand-selected timber and an inherited sense of how a hull should sit in the water. Her hull, deck and structural timbers are ironwood throughout.

Thirteen for Ten
The Crew

Thirteen for Ten

Thirteen crew for ten guests, a ratio that means the chef knows a guest's breakfast before the question is asked, with a PADI instructor aboard.

Komodo and Raja Ampat
Her Waters

Komodo and Raja Ampat

Komodo from April through September and Raja Ampat from November through March, with a draft of 3.4 meters for the reef passages of the east.

Archipelago Chic
The Refit

Archipelago Chic

The 2025 refit removed the heaviness older phinisi interiors accumulate: lighter teak, one-at-a-time antiques, island textiles, renewed mechanical and electrical systems, rebuilt bathrooms, and a main deck opened to the sea.

"

We had a wonderful trip surrounded by the nicest crew that anyone could have. We expected to have a good experience but it was an incredible trip. All crew is happy and polite and make us feel like kings and queens.
