Nutmeg built empires on these islands. A charter through the Banda Sea sails straight through the history, with the reefs to match.
Nutmeg made these islands the most valuable real estate on earth once, and the Banda Sea has kept the receipts: Dutch forts on the hilltops, plantation houses under the palms, and a perfect volcanic cone rising from water two thousand meters deep. The Spice Islands are the archipelago's great history lesson, and the classroom is best entered by sea.
These are remote waters, a night's sail from anywhere, which is exactly why they stayed intact. A charter here combines the feeling of discovery with some of the finest snorkeling and diving in Indonesia, and the fleet's long-range yachts make the crossing in comfort.
The Fort Above the Harbor
Fort Belgica still holds its star-shaped walls above Banda Neira, and climbing its ramparts at golden hour is one of the great moments of any eastern itinerary. Below it, the town keeps its colonial avenues, its clove and nutmeg warehouses, and a harbor where your yacht will likely be the only one at anchor.

Ashore Among the Nutmeg
The plantations still work the old way. Walking the groves with a guide, cracking fresh mace from the shell, and tasting nutmeg jam in a plantation house is the kind of afternoon no resort can stage. Back aboard, the chef takes the morning's spices to the galley.

Sleeping in History
Several of the fleet's yachts know these waters well. Si Datu Bua even names a cabin for the Bandas, and her sisters have been crossing this sea for years. The extended spice route itinerary links the islands with the Forgotten Islands arc to the south, ten days or more of sailing where the map still has room for wonder.

The Volcano at Dusk
Gunung Api is the resident drama, a cone the Dutch painted into every harbor view and the reason the soil grows what it grows. The climb before dawn earns a sunrise over the whole island group. The easier version is dinner on deck while the volcano goes violet with the evening.
