A Remarkable Story
Adelaar was first christened as a Dutch cargo ship in 1902 to sail the Baltic Sea. Appropriated by Germans in WWII, she was renamed Heimatland and used to transport war goods. In 1954, stripped of her masts and given an engine, she once again carried commercial cargo. Years later, two friends bought the vessel and in 1981 used her to escape East Berlin for the west.
By remarkable chance, the pair began refitting Heimatland in the same Dutch shipyard where she was built. An old man recognized her as Adelaar, the ship his father had built, and his original pictures were used to restore the ship to her former glory. Named Adelaar once again, she received a yacht-like interior, a 40-ton steel-concrete keel, and a traditional schooner rig.
A vessel built for adventure, Adelaar has sailed the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, and the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Undergoing a complete re-fit and adding a full-service dive center in 1992, since 1994 she has been based in Indonesia, sailing the matchless waters here as a luxury liveaboard. In 2011 was given her most luxurious upgrade to date and she awaits your arrival.
