According to governmental regulations, only locally flagged vessels are available for charter in Indonesia, creating a small pool of yachts available in the region. An increasing segment of charter guests arriving on private planes have wanted a higher calibre experience than what has been traditionally been available in this market.
With Dunia Baru’s refurbishment and heightened levels of hospitality, she aims to target this discerning crowd. She remains a distinctly Indonesian yacht, but with more of a high-end appeal than before. While those accustomed to the “white yachts” of the Med and Caribbean won’t find many here, they will certainly be pleasantly surprised and impressed by the experience onboard Dunia Baru.
Initially launched in 2014 following an eight-year build period by her original owner, there was no shortage of love or attention to detail given to this “grand dame” of luxury phinisi yachts. The owner decided to let go of her in 2019 with a two-year handover period with the new owners to keep things in place and ensure uninterrupted service onboard. While some yachts will let the crew go during maintenance periods, Dunia Baru carried on, full steam ahead, with the entire crew family to work on the refits.
The result is a new, understated look, building on the quality finishes the yacht has been known for since her inception. Following her 10-month maintenance period, the yacht features new soft touches, and a renewed modern feel, while maintaining her traditional design. Undertaking a refit on such a large wooden superyacht is a reminder of why they are so few and far between around the world. They require painstaking attention to detail and constant maintenance to still present in mint condition. Dunia Baru’s new owners have taken this challenge to heart and the results show in the finished product.
Dunia Baru is no stranger to long journeys taking in the best of Indonesia’s isles. The vessel has always been incredibly seaworthy and stable while at sea, traversing the archipelago from Bali to Sorong and back over 1,800 miles per way non-stop on many occasions. As part of her recent upgrades, the gensets were rebuilt and the commitment to engineering below deck remains as strong as ever with the retention of the systems engineer who built the boat.
Dunia Baru truly is and will remain a family yacht: the crew have all stayed on and made the transition for the new owners seamless, while the original boat builders are still a part of the crew, and help as deckhands, tender drivers and an additional divemaster. This testament to the pride in their work and owner/guest experience is hard to beat, plus it’s always handy to have the original carpenter to hand should you need a quick fix!
Dunia Baru is available for charter in Raja Ampat, Komodo National Park, the Spice Islands and the Banda Sea.
